Private Speech Therapy in London

Nurturing and empowering children and adults  with passion, knowledge and mindfulness

Marzia Ambrosio – Specialist Speech and Language Therapist and Orofacial Myologist

I received my Foundation Degree in Speech and Language Therapy at University of Naples Luigi Vanvitelli. I have practiced in Italy with a wide range of paediatric and adults disorders before moving to London in 2016. I strongly believe that an excellent clinician should be able to combine both clinical expertise and robust evidence-based literature available, and this is the main reason why I decided to undertake my MSc in Speech, Language and Communication – Advanced Practice at City, University of London. I am currently completing my advanced academic studies while working part-time for the NHS and privately.

I have been working for a private practice in London for 2 years where I had the chance to apply my theoretical and practical experience with young children and teenagers up to 18 years old.

I also collaborate with the school SIAL “Scuola Italiana a Londra” .

What makes my approach reliable?

I provide highly specialist service and I continuously enhance my knowledge in the field of Speech, Language and communication therapy by taking continuing professional development courses. I value every child’s unique identity and I tailor every intervention to their specific needs. I try to be as more evidence-based as possible and I always have a honest conversation with the families I work with regarding the quality and type of support I can provide. I justify my clinical choices by providing data to support my critical thinking.

I am a one of the few PROMPT therapists (Bridging level) in UK. I address motor based speech disorders using this specialist intervention which requires advanced knowledge and experience. I try to be as more visual as possible: I consider myself a communication facilitator, and I provide every family with the tools they need to become facilitators in turn. I am MAKATON trained, an evidence-based approach which uses gestures to support the language acquisition and understanding.

I have studied singing at the Conservatory of Naples, and I love treating voice disorders given my professional and academic background. I combine several evidence-based approaches and techniques in the treatment of voice disorders such as the Accent Method, the Lessac-Madsen Resonant Voice Therapy, Expiratory muscle strength training (EMST), Stretch and Flow Phonation, Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises, Straw Phonation, Yawn- Sigh, PROEL. I am a certified LSVT (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) clinician. I am a LSVT LOUD provider for both people with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and children with other neurological conditions.

I am trained in Colourful Semantics, an approach taught in several schools around the UK to support sentence and narrative acquisition.

I am trained in Attention Autism Program, which is widely used in UK to support the access to the communication prerequisites namely attention in all its levels. I treat Autism Spectrum Disorder with a range of evidence-based interventions including SCERTS and TEACCH. I am an Autism Diagnostic Observational Schedule (ADOS-2) certified clinician and I provide expertise in multidisciplinary diagnostic assessments with children, young people and adults with a broad range of unique profiles. I am also trained in conducting parental autism interviews through the Developmental, Dimensional and Diagnostic Interview(3Di). I am specialized in the use of Augmentative Alternative Communication Systems (AAC) including low tech systems (Makaton, pictures, Core Board) and high tech systems(e.g. the voice output device Proloquo2Go.)

I carry out medico legal work. I have specialist experience and training in the following areas:

  • SENDIST/SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) Tribunals
  • Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) appraisals and writing. I review medical notes and other important documents.
  • I provide assessment and diagnosis of the client’s speech and language skills to determine whether a problem exists and, if it does, how severe it is.
  • I write a detailed report of findings, diagnosis, prognosis and recommendations for further therapy.
  • In SENDIST cases I fulfill the need for very specific recommendations quantifying the amount of ongoing therapy considered necessary.
  • I offer appearance at Tribunal/Court as an expert witness if applicable.

What makes me a reliable clinician is, most and foremost, the time I spend to study for my patients.

Clinical cases can be similar , but also very different, to what we have previously seen. My job is not based on a passive and prescriptive approach: just the opposite. Whoever adopts a “one-size-fits-all” therapy will surely overlook the complexity of the environmental, social, psychological and biomechanical factors accountable for the diverse profiles we see in our profession.

  • I would recommend Marzia thoroughly!

Marzia has helped me finding the resonance skills I was looking for and she supported me resolving my vocal folds nodules. I could avoid surgery thanks to the speech therapy together. I think she is a passionate and knowledgeable clinician. Highly recommended.

  • A reliable and proficient clinician

I have met Marzia when I was looking for a PROMPT therapist for my child, Anne, who has been diagnosed with apraxia of childhood when she was 4. We had been looking for a specialist in the field but we struggled finding a therapist in London with this type of experience. Marzia helped Anne significantly and she is now much more empowered in expressing needs and feelings with everyone. Thanks Marzia!

    Cathy, mother of Anne
